Mark's Story

Mark TaylorSoon after graduation I incorporated a business called Printerman, Inc., which started out as a small commercial printing company. In its first decade the company enjoyed excellent profitability and we expanded on three occasions, but we soon hit a plateau where it became difficult to continue our level of profitability. Small individual printing companies with lower operating cost entered the playing field which made the industry extremely competitive, to the point were profit margins were severely affected. Despite working twelve hours a day we were not seeing the results of our former years. After carefully assessing the situation, it was clear that we had to make a decision either to get out of the business altogether, or specialize in a particular product and find our niche market that would place us ahead of our competition.

I made a decision to specialize in high quality rotogravure printed paperboard packaging and to go after specific fortune 500 manufacturers. This required a considerable amount of strategic planning, traveling and investment.

After preparing a five-year plan and presenting it to a series of bankers, I was able to secure a $15 million loan at a debt to equity ration of 15 to .25, which was a miracle. In the second year of our operation, I was able to refinance that loan with the Finnish Go vernment at a much reduced interest rate since we were purchasing some of our paperboard requirements from Finland. We also received divine favor when the loan was converted from Swiss Frank (CHS) to the US$ where we made a sizable foreign exchange gain.

We purchased the most modern inline printing and die-cutting press worldwide from Bobst in Lausanne, Switzerland. At that time when we purchased the Bobst Champlain Lemanic 650, they were only six such printing presses in the world. My competition said I was crazy as our company would never be able to secure the required orders to keep the machine productive, as it produced folding box cartons at a speed of over 1,000 feet per minute. Not only would we have to compete for market share locally, but also regional and international.

As CEO and the largest shareholder in the operation, I was responsible for the construction of our new facility, purchasing of the equipment, training & development, securing FDA approval in order to ship products into the North American Market. My responsibilities also involved establishing our general administration, graphic arts, quality control, sales & marketing, human resources, finance, import & export and production departments. Prior to the equipment arriving in Barbados, I made a decision to send our plant manager to Switzerland for a period of six months training, as Bobst had made arrangements for him to be trained on the equipment at a plant in Lausanne.

Much of my time in the initial year of the operation was spent training and developing our sales & marketing department. Humbly, my approach to marketing was so successful that we won the Exporter of the Year award, as well as the Environmental Award from the Industrial Development Corporation, a Government Agency.

Due to the size of the investment, I also negotiated with the Government of Barbados and secured a 10-year tax holiday for the company, Printerpack Limited. The basis of our application was due the size of our investment and recognizing that we would become a valuable earner of foreign exchange for the Government, since we estimated that 98% of our product would be exported.

It is uncommon for a company making such a large investment to be profitable in its first year of operation, but with a strong team we made it happen. We secured clients throughout the Caribbean Region, North and South America. Contracts were secured from fortune 500 companies. Some of the companies we supplied with packaging included RJ Reynolds Tobacco, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Colgate Palmolive, British American Tobacco, The Carreras Group, West Indian Tobacco, McDonalds, Burger King, Seprod, Jamaica Citrus Growers, Barbados Dairy Industries, Land O'Lakes, as well as many others.

From that small printing operation (Printerman, Inc.), we increased our sales by over 2,000% in the first year of our expansion and realized a healthy profit due to an aggressive sales & marketing approach, equipment of the highest quality and divine favor.

During my thirty-five years in the corporate world I have traveled to almost every Continent meeting with new Prospects, Clients, Suppliers, various Organizations and Agencies.
